Displacement is an exploration of how memories gain strength and—ultimately—ascendancy. These images invoke the process by which fragments, tiny snapshots of color and shape over time become elemental symbols and glyphs in the personal mythologies unique to each of us. The work traffics in the language of half-remembered dreams, possessed of a meaning and mystery far beyond its literal origins in the model car decals of the artist’s childhood. Simple visual elements are transmuted through scale and structure into totemic images of enormous visceral power. Autobiographical in the broadest sense, the series posits line and shape as gestation of self: the first awakening of barely-perceived aspirations, emotions so new as to be nameless, untested patterns of thought only hinted at, and the dim realization of the infinite strangeness of the worlds outside one’s own. Displacement evokes -- or, more precisely, exhumes -- a fathomless internal universe of memory, emotion, and desire.
